Join the 2019 Chinese New Year Celebration – The Year of Pig
February 01, 2019
Toronto Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA) is going to celebrate Chinese New Year with Torontonians in one of the biggest Chinatown across North America. The event will be held at Chinatown Center (222 Spadina Ave.) and Dragon City Mall (280 Spadina Ave.) on February 9th and 10th (the fifth and sixth day of Chinese New Year). The event will include traditional performances, interactive booth games, and lucky draw for visitors to experience the cheerful atmosphere of the Chinese New Year.
2019 is known as the year of “The Pig”. In the traditional Chinese culture, if you don’t have a pig at home, these won’t be a “home.” At the same time, from the puff of the pig, it can be seen that the pig can be filled with wealth, and thus the pig is considered to be a symbol of “RICH-NESS.” During two days of the celebration, CBIA would like to wish the crowd much happiness and would distribute the red pockets and couplets to everyone representing prosperity and luck, also hope that everyone has a wonderful and prosperous year ahead.
“Chinese New Year is the most important day of the year in our Chinese culture. We hope that this celebration in Chinatown will not only promote local businesses but also provide a chance for Torontoist to share the happiness atmosphere from the Chinese culture,” Chinatown Business Improvement Area Chair, Tonny Louie said.
This celebration involves traditional performances like Fortune Telling, Lion Dance and God of Fortune giving out red pockets, also many interactive games – usually the most exciting part for kids to get involved in CNY- are the highlights for this event. Last but not least, this celebration is also sponsored by many Chinatown local businesses, these amazing lucky draw prizes will be sending to our participants for chances to eat, shop and explore our community with family and friends.
Many dignitaries from the 3-levels of government, the representative from Consulate General of The People’s Republic of China, corporate sponsors and community partners will be invited to the Opening Ceremonies with Lion Dance and Royal Canadian Navy HMCS York Band to reveal the Celebration.
With the display of the red lanterns and decorations along the streets at Chinatown, you will be deeply impressed by the amazing traditional Chinese cultural culture. There are many different varieties of festival products available at Chinatown, bring some home to have a joyful Chinese New Year. CBIA Event Co-Chairs Sunny Liu and Steven Pho have wished everyone a great Chinese New Year in advance, “We welcome you to join our Toronto Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebration and bring some prizes home for new year happiness!
