Chinatown in the Past Chinatown in the Past Did you know the first Chinatown was established along York Street in downtown Toronto in the late 1800s? It grew just north of the railway tracks where many early Chinese immigrants worked. This area did not last long before downtown development pushed Chinatown northwards to around Elizabeth Street and Queen Street in the early 1900s. After two-thirds of Chinatown was expropriated to build new City Hall and the public square, the Chinese community moved west along Dundas Street West to Spadina Avenue.
