Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA) is going to celebrate Chinese New Year with Torontoist in one of the biggest Chinatown across North America. The event will be held at Dragon City Mall (280 Spadina Ave.) and Walker Mall (421 Dundas Street W.) on January 28th and 29th (the first and second day of Chinese New Year). The event will include new yet traditional performances, interactive booth games and lucky draw for visitors to experience the cheerful atmosphere of Chinese New Year.
2017 is known as the year of “Rooster”. The traditional Chinese culture, rooster plays an important role for farmers. It is not only the sources of food, but also the clock for awaking the farmers start working after sunrise. Therefore, rooster represents integrity and lights. During the day of the celebration, CBIA would like to wish the crowd many happiness and would distribute the red pocket and couplet to everyone representing prosperity and luck, also hope that everyone have a wonderful and productive year ahead.
“Chinese New Year is the most important day of the year in our Chinese culture. We hope that this celebration in Chinatown will not only promote local businesses, but also provide a chance for Torontoist to experience the joyful atmosphere from Chinese culture,” Chinatown Business Improvement Area Chair, Tony Yu said.
This celebration involves traditional performances like Fortune Telling, Dragon Dance and God of Prosperity sending out red envelopes, also many interactive games -usually the most exciting part for kids to get involved in CNY- are the highlights for this event. Last but not least, this celebration is also sponsored by several Chinatown local businesses and Royal Ontario Museum, these amazing lucky draw prizes will be sending to our participants for chances to eat, shop and explore our community with family and friends.
Many dignitaries from the 3-levels of government, the Consulate General of The People’s Republic of China, corporate sponsors and community partners will be invited to the Opening Ceremonies with Dragon Dance and Royal Canadian Navy to reveal the Celebration.
You can already feel the CNY atmosphere in Chinatown with the displaying red lanterns and traditional products.
